The KUL team participated in the European Commission’s science fair, organized by the Marie Skłodowska Curie Actions. Science is Wonderful! is an annual science fair organised by the European Commission. It celebrates EU-funded research by inviting leading researchers from all over the world to come to Brussels and engage and inspire the next generation of scientists. Attracting over 5000 pupils from across Belgium each year, this two-day event has become a science outreach institution, free and open to all.

In 2025, KU Leuven celebrated its 600th anniversary, marking six centuries of excellence in education, research, and societal engagement. As part of this milestone, the university organized a series of outreach activities that highlighted its enduring commitment to knowledge sharing and innovation. Through public lectures, exhibitions, collaborative projects, and cultural events, KU Leuven connected academic achievements with broader audiences, fostering dialogue between science and society. These initiatives not only honored the university’s rich history but also emphasized its forward-looking vision to inspire future generations and strengthen its role as a global center of learning and discovery.

Outreach activity @ KULeuven: Dag van de wetenschap (12th December 2024)

The KUL team actively participated in the “dag van de wetenschap” (Science day) events held at campus Arenberg on December 12, 2024. Science Day is an initiative of the Flemish government in Belgium. It is an annual event to celebrate science where the general public gets to know the research activities carried out at the university. Science Day is organized in collaboration with the associations of Flemish universities and colleges, scientific institutions and associations, museums, companies and federations and consists of lectures, tours and workshops. Special focus is on young, often school children to get them interested in science. The KUL team demonstrated the power of a scanning tunneling microscope to image the lattice of graphite at atomic resolution by carrying out a live demonstration.

Physicist Roland Resel specializes in producing new crystals. He investigates how molecules crystallize on surfaces of the most varied kinds, from metals and rocks to pharmaceuticals and chocolate. Drawing on his many years of fundamental knowledge, he tracks down new crystal structures that enable the production of materials with special properties. In the case of pharmaceuticals, this relates to their solubility, for chocolate it is the exact melting point, and in electronics, special crystal structures are grown for semiconductors. The scientist's keen interest in the properties of materials accompanies him everywhere in his life, including his daily commute to work, which takes him through a forest. This is where Roland Resel explores nature's ability to produce crystals, from snow and ice to rock and moss.
